I only see skateboarding shows only in TV, watching X-games and Tony Hawk tours. It was a good thing that I brought my camera yesterday, not knowing there would be a Flip+Volcom tour and skateboard competition near our office.
I noticed a growing number of skateboarders every time I pass by Bonifacio High Street. There would be kids and adults, male and female, practicing their insane tricks and it amazes me how they are really dedicated to master their skills. Every time I see one fail to execute, he/she manages to get up (after a rib crushing fall) and do it again. Well, professional riders have their own flesh ripping and bone wrecking experience before reaching their level.
Flip and Volcom recently held their event, "Thirlla in Manila" showcasing the Flip riders: David Gonzales, Mark Appleyard, Luan Oliveira, Louie Lopez and Willow. I only took pictures of the competition showing the Filipino's homegrown board talents. The contest was really hard because all of them will perform in the "playground" at the same time.
I think the challenge is to really outperform the others.Their normal tricks might also be your secret trick so creativity here really is the key. But winning or not, all of them had a great time. Imagine them performing in front of their idols and gaining new fans; it will really motivate them to improve and reach the next level.
